Sometimes the game may have you search around for things or fight waves of enemies in a confined space, but mostly it will be going from place to place and fighting some set foes in a cave. While not all dungeons in the game are a part of the quests, many of them will make up the fighting portion of a job, the player plunging into some surprisingly small caves or ruins to wipe out all the monsters.Īdmittedly, the quests don’t often have too much to them from a gameplay standpoint. Major settlements will often contain quest boards where the player can pick up a new job, these usually involving a conflict either with overworld enemies or a dive down into one of the world’s many dungeons. Dragons, magical creatures, and angry wildlife make for a hostile world and evil magics have been causing problems all across it, so the player is given many quests over the course of the game to help solve the problems of the populace. Felingard’s cast of cat people aren’t alone on the continent, as monsters cut from fantasy cloth roam about it freely causing trouble. The full embrace of feline humor is only just the style of the world, as the quests are what make up the tasks that carry you through it. However, by completely embracing the concept and baking it in as a key component of the experience, Cat Quest makes it so that it’s almost disappointing to see moments where a pun isn’t being made, the world serving as a goofy playground for all the cat-related wordplay to flourish in. However, in those titles it is often a single character or moment that indulges in the pun making, things like the cat puns of Minette from Bravely Second: End Layer coming to mind with how at odds they seem with other elements of the game. Initially, it can seem like Cat Quest might be the kind of game that might make you groan with its constant cat jokes and puns, and in other games this can very well be the case. The king of the lands is a lion who speaks like the LOLcat internet memes, the mayor of Pawt City (which is a pun on “port city” and hardly the most strained pun you’ll find) is an oddly buff kitty, and even smaller quests that use the same few cat villager models will try to give their characters a bit of personality to set them apart. As you travel to places like The Catpital, The Deep Furrest, and the Furbidden Fields, you can inevitably expect to meet a lot of cat characters, but there is some variation within these felines to prevent it from being just unimaginative retreads. When a cat is surprised they exclaim “Meowzah”, rather than saying something is “very good” they would say it’s “furry good”, and they’ll find any chance they can to add words like “paws”, “pounce”, or “purr” to what they’re saying, sometimes even adding it in where the puns don’t really make sense if you stop to think about them. Nearly every character who can speak is a cat, many locations have some sort of cat pun as part of its name, and even the dialogue of the game is peppered with the kind of words you’d usually expect to find in a cat joke. Every single aspect of the game’s world is catered to the idea that this is a game well and truly about felines. Cat Quest is a game with an incredible commitment to a very simple idea to the point that it completely influences every part of it, and that idea is the deceptively simple but fairly obvious direction of being a game about a cat going on quests.Ĭat Quest didn’t just arbitrarily make a cat its lead protagonist though. Currently, the potentially useful knowledge among diseases, targets, and drugs are still hidden in the text descriptions. The above-mentioned databases provide valuable resources for drug discovery. Therapeutic Target Database is a database containing information about the known and explored therapeutic proteins and nucleic acid targets, diseases, pathway information, and the corresponding drugs.15 BindingDB is a public, Web-accessible database of measured binding affinities, focusing chiefly on the interactions of proteins considered to be drug targets with small, druglike molecules.14 The disease information of the targets and drugs are not yet provided. Drug-Bank database combines detailed drug (i.e., chemical, pharmacological, and pharmaceutical) data with comprehensive drug target (i.e., sequence, structure, and pathway) information.13 In DrugBank, the therapeutic indication descriptions (for example, "Used in combination with prednisone for the treatment of metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer") of drugs are listed, which needs further manual curation for specific diseases. Online Men-delian Inheritance in Man contains information on all known mendelian disorders and >12,000 genes.12 However, there is a lack of the disease-related target and drug information. Several research groups curated different databases for storing information of diseases, targets, and drugs. "Dirty" drugs may bind to many different molecular targets or receptors in the body and so tend to have a wide range of effects and possibly negative side effects.7-11 Target proteins are always promiscuous6 with small molecular drugs. (2014) 3, e105 doi:10.1038/psp.2014.1 published online 12 March 2014ĭrug discovery and development is a highly complex, lengthy, and expensive process, which starts from understanding molecular mechanisms of diseases, proceeds through selecting therapeutic targets, and leads to discovering drug leads and optimizing drug candidates.1-4 Diseases are usually multifactorial,5 in which multiple targets are affected and have to be targeted for successful treatment outcomes. To our knowledge, VNP is the first free interactive VNP server that should be very helpful for systems pharmacology research. Visual network pharmacology (VNP) is developed to visualize network pharmacology of targets, diseases, and drugs with a graph network by using disease, target or drug names, chemical structures, or protein sequence. Network pharmacology description and analysis not only give a systems-level understanding of drug action and disease complexity but can also help to improve the efficiency of target selection and drug design. In drug discovery, promiscuous targets, multifactorial diseases, and "dirty" drugs construct complex network relationships. While Star Ocean First Departure R may seem like a somewhat generic fantasy RPG at first glance, it was actually atypical for the genre at the time of release because of how it presents a more traditional fantasy experience through a sci-fi lens. Still, I can get past the lack of significant improvements because the base game is such a hidden gem and this port does not actively worsen that experience in any way. Fortunately, these scenes were rare, but they are emblematic of the fairly low-effort port that Star Ocean First Departure R is. They feature the mediocre First Departure designs too, so it doesn't always mesh with the new art. Even though Star Ocean First Departure R only contains about 10 minutes of these, they weren't converted over from PSP well and don't look great. Nowhere does this hurt more than in the anime cutscenes. Locations and characters are all still well-designed, but they can look quite muddled and pixelated when blown up on a large HD screen. Though things do look a bit better, HD also highlights the rougher edges of this PSP remake. Other than that, the game is obviously in HD now. Those changes are all good but fairly minute. Like the voices, these illustrations can be switched on a whim via in-game menus for those who may prefer the previous ones more. Finally, all of the character portraits have been redone by illustrator Katsumi Enami, which is definitely appreciated as the original First Departure portraits are pretty rough by modern standards. Traversal can now be sped up at the press of a button, which is helpful as the basic movement speed in Star Ocean is definitely slow. All three can be toggled on and off at all times, so the game does give players the tools to find their favorite. While the English localization is spotty and mostly held up by a strong performance from Yuri Lowenthal, both Japanese voiceovers are good. Both versions of the PSP voiceover as well as a new one with the original cast from the SNES release days are included as well. Some minor game balancing has been done, but it is negligible, especially to those who have never played the game before. The improvements in First Departure R are mostly minor. As a port, Star Ocean First Departure R falls somewhere in the middle. On the other hand, you have the PC port of Chrono Trigger that carried over many problems from the mobile version of the game and had to be improved via patches for months. On the one hand, you have the solid, if overpriced, Collection of Mana with ports of the first two Mana games and a localized version of Trials of Mana. Ports and re-releases from Square Enix tend to be a mixed bag. "The original Star Ocean still remains a great game in 2019 and First Departure is a very good remake and way to expose the series to new people." As a result, Star Ocean First Departure R is definitely worth checking out if you are interested in the series, though the transition from PSP to home consoles hasn't really enhanced that much. That's a good thing too, as the original Star Ocean still remains a great game in 2019 and First Departure is a very good remake and way to expose the series to new people. Star Ocean First Departure R, an enhanced re-release of a 2007 PSP remake of the first game in the series, is now giving PS4 and Nintendo Switch players the chance to get into the series with the entry that started it all. Over just this past year, the publisher has re-released some Romancing SaGa games as well as localized and announced a remake of Trials of Mana. That being said, the series may have a second chance to gain a western audience as Square Enix has been paying a bit more attention to its classic properties. Even though Square Enix's Star Ocean has been an ongoing series since the early 1990s, it has failed to catch on in the west like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest or even Mana. Given the breadth of his subject matter, common typologies and motifs in vernacular architecture can be identified through their repetition. These structures were usually isolated in the frame and photographed head-on or at an oblique angle to provide descriptive details. In his photography, Margolies utilized a straightforward, unsentimental approach that emphasized the form of the buildings. Margolies' work was influential in the addition of roadside buildings to the National Register of Historic Places beginning in the late 1970s. Yet, in many instances, the only remaining record of these buildings is on Margolies' film, because tourist architecture was endangered by the expansion of the interstate system and changing travel desires. Emerging with the prosperity of the post-WWII era, roadside and commercial structures spread with the boom of suburbanization and the expansion of paved roads across the United States. Margolies' Roadside America work chronicled a period of American history defined by the automobile and the ease of travel it allowed. These holdings form the core of what Margolies considered the exemplary images of his subject matter. Approximately half of the slides show sites in California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Texas, but all 48 contiguous states are represented. The Library of Congress began to acquire portions of the archive in 2007, with the bulk of the materials arriving in 2015. Frequent subjects include restaurants, gas stations, movie theaters, motels, signage, miniature golf courses, and beach and mountain vacation resorts. Photographed over a span of forty years (1969-2008) by architectural critic and curator John Margolies (1940-2016), the collection consists of 11,710 color slides (35mm film transparencies). The John Margolies Roadside America Photograph Archive is one of the most comprehensive documentary studies of vernacular commercial structures along main streets, byways, and highways throughout the United States in the twentieth century. |
